CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: Meulin Leijon
CANON: Homestuck
CANON REFERENCE: Meulin Leijon on the HS Wiki
AGE: 16
GENDER: Female
YEAR IN SCHOOL/FACULTY POSITION: 11th grade
APPEARANCE: Meulin in canon is a grey troll with horns and white dead eyes. She is obviously not a grey troll here, instead sporting normal green eyes, dark brown skin with a dash of freckles and a notable lack of horns.
PERSONALITY:As a note, Meulin is, in the actual canon, a bit of a joke character. She's been dead but aware in a sort of afterlife for far too long and her personality became one note, an exaggeration of herself as a fandom and shipping obsessed tumblr expy. That isn't to say that Meulin isn't fandom and shipping obsessed, but it's a facet of her personality as opposed to whole thing.
Meulin smiles. She smiles through terrible things and tries to forget the awkward and painful things of her life. The time she made a dozen cats appear in class doesn't matter and the mother who left them is a face and smile and not much more. Or at least she would hope you think that. She's painfully aware of her effect on others and while she might let down her guard to others for moments, she would rather appear smiling and excited than gloomy and risk upsetting others.
This makes her power the worst thing in the world to her. She tries to spin it as a cute power, something like having cats for friends when stuff gets rough or she's lonely, but really it feel more like a blaring sign to others that she's not doing well. On the bright side, (and Meulin is nothing but seeing bright sides) generally people react well to the cats and manage to help her forget whatever negative emotion spawned them in the first place.
She's also quite outgoing. She loved to text and chat and while she misses being able to talk to people and have a conversation not quite filled with misunderstanding, she doesn't let it stop her from trying to carry conversations anyways. It might seem like that's another facet of her stepford smiling but it's really just her personality. She loves people and really that's the problem, because as she loves people, she hates seeming them upset or sad. Doubly so if she caused it. Still, she can be a little dense about others emotions outside of obvious sadness or anger. She doesn't quite pick up on disdain or distrust as much as another person might.
Another area where she's a little dense is about the boundaries between okay and sort of creepy. She's been known to ship her friends, declaring two unattached friend the best relationship that could ever happen, much to their dismay and while she hasn't progressed to her canon's low of writing fanfiction about her friends, she definitely has no qualms at all about shipping real people, regardless of their affections. That isn't to say she has no eye for relationships, years of fandom and shipping have trained her to see potential everywhere and she often sees connections and relationships that no one else might have thought of but work beautifully. She does not apologize if you and your boyfriend are one of her notps.
POWERS/ABILITIES: Meulin's power is to broadcast her negative emotions by projecting cats, kittens, and on very rare and traumatizing events she has yet to really face, small tigers and lions. The size of the cat is not always related to the intensity of the emotion but anything larger than a medium dog is generally related to deaths or other such powerful emotional events.
These projections waver back and forth between solid and not solid and are generally slightly see through when not solid. They can take the size and shape of any sort of cat and no two instances of a single emotion really create the same cat. Cats can look similar but really there are small differences, just like no two instances of worry or sadness or anger are the same.
AU HISTORY: Meulin grew up in a small town in Virgina in a single parent household. Her father worked in a factory nearby, which definitely helped provide for Meulin and her two sisters, but left her older sister with much of the burden of caring for them. It never seemed to bother her sister and thus never bothered Meulin. Meulin grew up loved and cared for, by both a lion of a father and two happy sisters.
It was sheer accident that led to her losing her hearing at the age of 10. A case of chicken pox didn't seem quite as severe as it was and complications arose, with just her teenager sister to care for her during the day. Everyone agreed it was no one's fault in particular but Meulin lost almost her entire ability to hear. Extremely loud sounds are easiest to hear but she tends to feel those with her body as well so no one is really sure exactly how damaged it was.
Although she outwardly tried to remain positive, Meulin definitely missed her hearing. Her sister was always guilty when Meulin brought it up and soon she simply stopped talking about it. It became obvious that her negativity or sadness made others sad and she couldn't deal with that. Instead, she took to writing and drawing her thoughts and words out dramatically. As if to compensate for her inability to really hear how she was speaking, her mannerisms became a bit exaggerated to reflect the tone she was hoping she inflected. Her sisters and father all learned sign language, though her sisters were more fluent than her father. It's not her favorite method of communicating but she's had several years to come up with little short cuts and make up signs with her sisters to make it feel more unique to her. This has the side effect of making her conversations hard to follow, even if you are fluent, but she'll happily teach her made up signs to friends.
Still, things only got harder as she moved in high school and found the world was not really set up for her. She couldn't fangirl over the bands (which she's sure she would have loved) and she couldn't hear her teachers explain answers or give tips. Sure, things written out were helpful but there was much lost in everyday classroom situations. She started picking up lip reading but it was very hit or miss.
It was in her second semester as a freshman that she started seeing cats appear. And what was more alarming, really, was that everyone else saw them too. She didn't connect it to her emotions at first, perhaps because she's very used to hiding them, and she certainly didn't connect it to a mutation. It wasn't until someone put their hand through one that she started worrying and well, worry was a grey and white tabby that time. Grey and white and real to the touch for a split second and see through the next. Someone called her a mutant and she panicked, with a large orange tomcat appearing on her desk. This only got worse until her sister came collected her, soothing her until all the cats disappeared.
This really only reinforced her need to remain happy at all times and she doubled her efforts to be calm and happy, while she dove into fandoms as a emotional release. There, she didn't have to restrain herself and if her sadness at someone dying or her frustration at a ship not coming to life caused cats to appear, well she was in her room on a computer and no one had to know. Anime, live action, sitcoms, her tastes were broad and varied and nothing really seemed too obscure if there was someone to commiserate with.
By the summer of her 16th year, she found the Institute and latched on it. Really, she knew she need help deep down, though she thought perhaps controlling the cats would be her help rather than the obvious issues. She begged her sister and father to go and rather reluctantly, she was allowed. She has to go home for every break and text once a day, but she was allowed a bit of freedom and the opportunity to learn a bit of control.
